About Mayor Tammy de Weerd
After taking office in January 2004, Meridian Mayor Tammy de Weerd immediately went to work implementing priorities. “This is a time of new possibilities in the City of Meridian.”
Her list of goals include providing the best possible services to citizens; increasing citizen involvement; expanding parks and recreational opportunities; preserving safety; and enhancing the City's economic development efforts to provide jobs, diversity in housing, places to shop and top quality redevelopment of downtown Meridian.
Tammy and her leadership team have established policies and initiatives to improve the quality of life for all Meridian residents. Recognizing the city’s greatest asset, the talents of its people, she united the leaders of business, education, youth and the faith community. As a result, Meridian has been recognized twice in Newsweek as one of America’s 100 Best Places for Young People and was listed as one of the 100 Best Places to Live in CNN/Money magazines.
Tammy looks to the future, making decisions that continue to lead Meridian to be a ‘premier place to live, work, and raise a family.’ “We are poised to climb new heights.” She believes, “Teamwork and partnerships are key to the City’s future.”
She brings to the office extensive experience as an elected official, community volunteer and businesswoman. Tammy was a charter member and first President of the Meridian Parks and Recreation Commission, and served two years on the Planning and Zoning Commission before her election to Meridian City Council in 1999. She served 4 years on Meridian City Council, 2 as Council President. Tammy was first elected Mayor on November 3, 2003, then re-elected to a second term on November 6, 2007.
Many organizations have recognized Tammy for her leadership roles and making a difference in the community:
· Woman of the Year by Meridian Chamber of Commerce
· Kiwanian of the Year by the Meridian Kiwanis Club
· Idaho's first "Brightest Star" by Governor Dirk Kempthorne
· Woman of Today and Tomorrow by Girl Scouts of the Silver Sage
Her volunteer activities reflect her commitment to active partnerships between government and the private sector. Tammy and husband Jan have four children. (see photo below)
